Challenge
The company had long relied on an on-premise environment with virtual machines purchased from external vendors. While the setup was functional, it came with clear limitations. Much of the infrastructure was managed externally, which created dependencies, slowed down development, and made it difficult to quickly adapt to changing business or regulatory needs.
Solution
Aiming to improve agility, scalability, and adopt a modern tech stack to attract engineers, the bank chose Google Cloud Platform (GCP) as its foundation, valuing its security, compliance features, and flexibility to enable the transition. This move represented a completely new playing field, as internal teams needed to build most platform components themselves instead of relying on prepackaged solutions, demanding not only cloud skills but also a deep understanding of the organization’s structure, needs, and constraints. Irori joined the platform team to support the migration, and a key insight was that not everything should simply be lifted and shifted; in many cases, systems had to be rebuilt from the ground up to fully benefit from a cloud-native environment, while others required only minor adjustments.
Results
The company now runs on a platform that not only meets today’s requirements but is designed to evolve. The new GCP-based environment enables teams to experiment, move faster, and respond quickly to regulatory changes. Beyond the technical shift, the transformation has also enhanced the company’s ability to attract modern developers and platform engineers, positioning it as a forward-leaning player in a traditionally conservative industry.
